Fresh From the Oven: My First Homemade Bread & Burger Buns

Every homesteading journey is filled with firsts, and today was one I’ll never forget.

For the first time, I baked homemade sandwich bread and homemade burger buns completely from scratch. Watching the dough rise, shaping each loaf by hand, and pulling golden brown bread from the oven was incredibly rewarding.

The best part wasn’t just how beautiful they looked—it was the aroma. If you’ve ever baked fresh bread, you know exactly what I mean. The smell filled our home with warmth, comfort, and a reminder that some of life’s greatest joys are made with simple ingredients and a little patience.

Like every new skill on the homestead, bread baking takes practice, but I’m excited to keep learning and improving. There’s something special about providing food you’ve made with your own hands.

Thank you for following along on this journey as Taylorosa Homestead continues to grow. Every new project reminds me that homesteading isn’t about perfection—it’s about learning, growing, and sharing the experience.

I can’t wait to see what’s coming out of the oven next!

From Pantry to Rum Cake: A Homesteading Lesson on Brown Sugar ⭐

When my son asked me to bake a rum cake for his Juneteenth barbecue, I happily agreed. As I gathered my ingredients and started preparing the cake, I realized I was missing one important item—brown sugar. For a moment, I was frustrated and considered making a trip to the store.

Then I remembered something every homesteader should know: brown sugar is simply white sugar mixed with molasses.

Instead of hopping in the car, I headed to my pantry, mixed the ingredients together, and had exactly what I needed within minutes. It was a small reminder that many of the products we buy regularly can be made right at home with simple ingredients we already have on hand.

Homesteading isn’t just about growing food or raising animals. It’s about learning skills, becoming more self-reliant, and discovering just how much we can do for ourselves.

This little rum cake adventure turned into a valuable lesson and a reminder of why we chose this lifestyle.

Preparing for Goats: Building the Foundation Before They Arrive

“Every homestead project starts with preparation. Before we can bring our first goats home, we’re working to create a safe, comfortable space for them to thrive.”

At Taylorosa Homestead, we believe that bringing animals onto a homestead starts long before they arrive. While we are excited about the possibility of adding two Mini Nubian goats to our family, we know the most important step is making sure we are fully prepared first.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve been researching goat care, planning fencing, designing shelter space, and making a list of everything needed to provide a safe and healthy environment. Our goal is not simply to purchase goats, but to ensure we have proper housing, secure fencing, feeders, water systems, bedding, and supplies in place before we bring them home.

We are currently working on converting an existing kennel area into a temporary shelter that will serve as a safe space while we continue building and improving their future home. There is still work to be done, including shelter improvements, fencing upgrades, hay storage, feeders, and other essential supplies.

Like many small homesteads, we’re building our dream one project at a time. Every board, fence panel, bucket, and bag of bedding brings us one step closer to welcoming our first goats.

If you enjoy following our journey and would like to help, we are grateful for donations of gently used farm and livestock equipment such as cattle panels, T-posts, feeders, shelters, water buckets, feed containers, or other goat-related supplies. Monetary donations are also appreciated and will go directly toward preparing the shelter and purchasing the equipment needed before we can responsibly bring our goats home.

For now, our focus remains on preparation. We want to make sure everything is ready before we take the exciting step of purchasing our first goats. Thank you for following along, encouraging us, and supporting Taylorosa Homestead as we continue building a life centered around faith, family, hard work, and simple country living.

We look forward to sharing each step of this journey with you.

A New Chapter Begins: Bringing Goats to Taylorosa Homestead

As Taylorosa Homestead continues to grow, we’re excited to take the next step in our journey by adding goats to the farm. Goats will not only help us expand our homestead but will also open the door to future projects and products.
To prepare for their arrival, we are working on fencing, shelters, feeding supplies, and other equipment needed to provide them with a safe and healthy home. This is one of the reasons we’ve added a donation option to our website.
Every donation, no matter the size, helps us purchase goats, fencing, shelters, feed, and other homestead supplies needed to continue growing. Your support allows us to build a stronger, more sustainable homestead while sharing our journey with others.
Thank you for believing in our dream and supporting Taylorosa Homestead. We are grateful for every contribution and look forward to sharing this exciting new chapter with you.
From our homestead to your home,
Taylorosa Homestead
